Seeing Documents Evolve: Introducing Timeline Mode in Super Comparer
In the life of a legal document, every word matters, and every change tells a story. Lawyers need to understand not just what has changed, but when and why it changed.
That’s why we’ve introduced Timeline Mode in Super Comparer: a new way to visualise document evolution, sentence by sentence, draft by draft.
From Single Anchor to Sequential Comparison
Since the launch of Super Comparer’s powerful multi-document blacklining in 2023, it has worked in Anchor Mode - users chose one “base” contract (the anchor), and every other document was compared directly against it. Anchor Mode is ideal when you want to see how far a draft has moved away from the original. But what if you need to track the journey a document has taken through multiple rounds? That’s where our new Timeline Mode comes in.
How Timeline Mode Works
With the launch of our self-service offering in August 2025, we have introduced Timeline Mode in Super Comparer.
In Timeline Mode, each draft is compared against its immediate predecessor in the sequence. So, instead of jumping from the first to the last version, you see every intermediate step.
The familiar Super Comparer side-by-side view still shows your documents as columns.
Now, you can toggle between Anchor Mode and Timeline Mode with a single click.
In Timeline Mode, the blacklines reveal only the changes made since the previous draft - making it easy to follow the flow of edits, whether due to client instructions or counterparty negotiations.
Key Use Cases for Lawyers
1. Tracking Negotiation Progress
In complex deals, negotiations can stretch over weeks or months. Timeline Mode lets you see the precise drafting changes from one round to the next. This is perfect for understanding the context behind each concession or amendment.
2. Version Control Without the Chaos
When dozens of versions are floating around inboxes and shared drives, it’s easy to lose track. Timeline Mode gives you a structured, chronological view of edits - removing guesswork and saving hours of manual comparison.
Why Timeline Mode Matters
For lawyers, the sequence of changes can be just as important as the changes themselves. A clause that’s been repeatedly modified might signal an unresolved commercial or legal issue. A concession introduced in one round but reversed in the next could raise strategic or risk considerations.
And because Super Comparer isn’t powered by generative AI, it doesn’t hallucinate or summarise - it shows you the exact language from your documents, and only your documents. You can trust that every blackline you see is grounded in the source material. That level of reliability is critical when every word has legal and commercial consequences.
Anchor Mode + Timeline Mode = Complete Visibility
Super Comparer now gives you two complementary lenses:
Anchor Mode – See how far each document has moved from a base
Timeline Mode – Follow the step-by-step evolution of the document.
Together, they give lawyers a complete picture of how a document’s language has shifted - both in distance and in direction - while ensuring every view is 100% faithful to the underlying documents.
Documents Evolve, and Your Tools Must Also Evolve
With Timeline Mode, you can see exactly how. No more version chaos, no more guesswork - just clear, precise insight into the life of your documents.
Whether you’re preparing for a key negotiation, managing complex deal paperwork, or reviewing multiple rounds of edits, Timeline Mode ensures you never miss the story hidden in the changes - and that you can trust every word you see.
